Girls Weekend in Dallas-Fort Worth

Two of my best friends from college came to visit the first weekend in May.  It was so great to see them since I hadn't seen them since December, & it felt so nice taking a long weekend from work.

I picked them up from the airport around 1:30 on Friday afternoon & dropped them off again around 4:30 Monday afternoon.  We managed to pack a lot into our 75 hours.  If I was still working on my 101 in 1001 list their visit definitely would have counted as "be a tourist in DFW."

Friday night we went out in the Stockyards.  We of course went to Star Cafe for supper because Steak Salad.  Not only would that have been where we went because Sonja had never been & I feel the need to bring anyone, but Kayla asked before I could even suggest it.  I took her when she visited last year.  I'm telling you, it leaves an impression!  After supper we just hit up a couple of different bars down there & made friends with various people at each new place.

We went to brunch at Johnathon's in Oak Cliff.  I had been wanting to go there for awhile, & pretty sure I even suggested it as an option when Kayla was visiting last year when we met up with my friends Helen & Caleb.  We all got The Kure for breakfast & it was SO good!  Sonja & I did the build your own bloody bar while Kayla got a mimosa.  It was such a nice day out for the patio & despite being busy, our waiter was super awesome!

After brunch we wandered around Bishop Arts.  I love each of the different areas of Dallas, well I'm not really an Uptown Girl (cue Billy Joel), but I love how unique each area is.  I definitely like each of them for different occasions.  Anyway, Bishop Arts was Sonja's request.  So we spent the afternoon wandering up & down Bishop Ave in & out of different little boutiques.  At the end I made them take a detour down a side road so that we could go to Wild Detectives for coffee because I needed to be caffeinated.  We had been out super late the night before & still had a night ahead of us.

We went home, changed, hung out for a bit, & then headed to Deep Ellum.  Deep Ellum was Kayla's request & probably my favorite of the Dallas areas.  We had plans of mural hunting, & did see a couple, but hunger won out.  First stop, the Green Room because I am obsessed with their bacon wrapped jalapenos.  We hung out on the rooftop there for a bit sharing some appetizers & having some drinks before heading to Mama Tried.  Mama Tried is fairly new so I had never been there before.  It wasn't quite what I was expecting but the outdoor area was cool.  We played a few rounds of giant Jenga & my friend Raeann stopped by to say hi on the way to a concert.  We all decided that we were hungry though so I took the to Deep Ellum Brewing for some loaded tots.  We called it a night around 10-10:30 & headed back home.

Sunday we headed 2 hours east to Lindale so we could go to Miranda Lambert's Pink Pistol.  Sonja had never been, Kayla loved it last time, & I've managed to find cute stuff there every single time I've gone.  Which really isn't a ton because it's 2 hours away, but I've been a handful of times.  This time I walked away with a dress & a skirt.  Still trying to find tops & shoes to wear with the skirt.  I am open to suggestions!  We of course also got some of Miranda's wine while we were there.  Love & War in Texas used to be attached to the store & it wasn't until writing this post that I learned that in the last year it has changed it's name to Texas Music City.  The food was the same, the decor was the same, I would have never have guessed.  The food there is really good & it was obviously in a convenient location so we had lunch there before heading back to Dallas.

We had accomplished pretty much everything on our to see list by that point except for a few items.  I really wanted to go to a winery or wine bar near me, any winery/wine bar, because there are quite a few by me & I've never been to any of them.  We went to Umbra.  It was a fairly random selection.  We just went to Main St in Grapevine & wandered into the first one we saw that was open.

I also really wanted to go to Cauldron Ice Cream.  I would 100% be lying if I said I wanted to go for any reason other than Instagram.  However, the ice cream really is amazing & the Belgian waffle puff cone...YUM!  I just got salted caramel this time around, but now that I've done my Instagram thing I want to go back & try some other flavors.  They had one called Rose H2O & I'm really interested in that one!

On their last day in Dallas there was only one thing left on the list to do.  But first brunch!  We went to Ellen's in downtown Dallas & of course sat on the patio.  I got shrimp & grits which I have been craving for approximately a year & a half.  The fact that I haven't just gotten them at some point in the last year & a half while living in the south is 100% on me.  But I did it.  I got them.  They were good, not as good as the ones I had a year & a half ago in Deep Ellum, but still good.  I think I'm going to tackle my own this summer...

After brunch it was onto the last thing on our list, The Sixth Floor Museum.  The fact that I've lived in the DFW are for 4 years now, am a history teacher, & have never been there before is a little weird.  I blame it on the fact that you almost never do the touristy things in your own town though.  It was really well done.  You get your own headset with a handheld device that lets you go through the museum at your own pace.

That museum is one of the 5 places you can visit if you get a CityPass.  However with the pass you can only choose 3 of them.  But now that I've done that one, I'm thinking that when I get back from MN this summer I'm going to buy the pass & visit 3 of the other ones (Reunion Tower, Perot Musuem, & Dallas Zoo) before school gets started again.

Because we still had some time to kill before they had to be at the airport & the weather was nice, we ended our busy weekend by just relaxing by the pool listening to some 90s & 2000s hip hop.

Tumbleweed Weekend In Houston & Then Some

I had planned on posting this last Monday but then I clearly didn't & it kept getting pushed aside & now here we are...you get TWO weekend recaps in one!  Thanks Megan for reminding me that this is perfectly acceptable.

Friday 4/22
I had originally planned on leaving for Houston around 8 am so that I could spend time at my favorite park & around Tomball.  Well after all was said & done I didn't leave until about 9 but I was still there by 12:30.  Once I got there I went to the beauty school so I could get my nasty split ends taken care of.  They were busy.  So I went off to Tomball & found a place there.  Once my hair was done I didn't have enough time to look around Tomball & go to my favorite park so I opted for the park.  At 3 I met up with my friend Zach for happy hour at Cisco's.  I frequented that place for happy hour when I still lived down in Houston, especially when I lived in Tomball & it was less than a mile from my apartment.  The margaritas are cheap, strong, & cold.

After happy hour I rushed attempted to rush down into Houston to meet up with my friend Abby.  Houston traffic sucks.  Having lived there for 3 years I should have known that rushing anywhere around 5 pm on a Friday wasn't going to happen.  Eventually I arrived at the hotel, we got our room set up, drank & snacked a little, & then headed off to Firehouse Saloon to see Zane Williams & Aaron Copeland.  A couple of days earlier Zane Williams had been looking for people to sell his merch at the show & since we were planning on being there anyway we jumped at the chance.  The show was great & we had a lot of fun selling merch & talking to different people.  I tried teaching a guy from NYC to two step but it didn't work out the best...  At the end of the night we were both beyond ready for tacos so we got our uber to take us to Chachos.  So good!

Saturday 4/23
Our plan for Saturday: wake up, start drinking, go to brunch around 10, bar hop until about 3, go to the Astros game, go to dinner, go to Ray Wylie Hubbard.
What happened: we woke up, laid around, had a drink, got brunch around 11, & bar hopped the rest of the night completely missing the Astros game & Ray Wylie Hubbard.

Sunday 4/24
Sunday morning we woke up & slowly got ready for the day.  I had plans to meet up with my friend Meg for brunch.  We went to Los Cucos for their breakfast buffet.  So much good Mexican.  If I'm being really honest I mostly ate a shit ton of barbacoa with small sides of other things.  We just hung out and talked for a few hours at the restaurant.  I had lunch plans with someone else so as soon as I left here I was off to the north side to meet up with Mr. Fireman, remember him?  It had been a year & a half since we had last seen each other.  We met up at Buffalo Wild Wings, he watched basketball, I watched hockey, & we just caught up on life.  Once the games were over it was time for me to be on my way since I had a 3.5-4 hour drive back to Fort Worth.  I of course stopped at Bucees on my way home but I refrained from going crazy.  No new CD, no 6 pack of fudge, just a cup of coffee & some roasted pecans.

Friday 4/29
We were supposed to get a massive storm on Friday night (kind of like we were supposed to earlier in the week)  However, just like the previous storm nothing happened.  There was a short little thunderstorm and then it was all over.  I went grocery shopping so that I could do meal prep over the weekend.  Once I got home I sat on the couch listening to the thunderstorm & started watching Love on Netflix.

Saturday 4/30
Saturday started off with going to work from 8-12 for Saturday School (thoughts on this coming tomorrow)  It really wasn't too bad.  I was half hoping that no one would show so that I could turn around & go home.  However, a few kids did show & that meant I got paid so overall not a bad gig.

As soon as I was free from Saturday school I went home & changed so that I could get a long overdue pedicure.  Since it's so warm out I've been digging the bright colors.  I previously had hot pink & almost got something similar but decided to go with bright orange.  The color is ORLY Melt Your Popsicle.  What I'm really in need of is to have my fingernails fixed but they are so short & gross right now I just need to start painting them myself for awhile until they grow.

As soon as I got home I decided to do some meal prep.  Normally I make one, maybe two, meals to last me for the week.  However, this has been backfiring on me.  I make one thing & then far too often during the week find myself wanting something else & spend way too much on buying random snacks/meals.  So, I decided to make smaller batches of a few things this time.  I still had some tortellini pasta left so I decided to make crack dip, potato salad, armadillo eggs, & then combined a chicken & shrimp recipe.  Hopefully this will stop me from spending so much on food during the week.  I had plans of going to a nearby park to do some cardio but that didn't actually happen.  Instead I watched more of Love on Netflix.

Sunday 5/1
Since I had skipped cardio on Saturday, & am trying to stick to a 12 week workout program, I made Saturday my rest day & went to the park as soon as I got up & had my breakfast & coffee.  I had never actually gone to this park before.  The trail actually goes quite a ways.  The whole trail is 40 miles that goes through different parts of Fort Worth.  I only did 30 min on the trails.  I parked in the lot closest to my apartment & then when I got on the trail decided to take a right.  I stopped once I hit another parking lot & then turned around.  I could have continued on next to the road but I wasn't quite sure where that would take me & I didn't really feel like being by the road.  Next time I go I'm going to take a left & see how far/where that takes me.

When I got home I grabbed a trash bag, went through my closet & took the bag to Goodwill.  There is definitely more I could have/should have gotten rid of, but I figured that bag was a good start.  However, as soon as I got home I decided maybe I should have also gotten rid of most of my long sleeve stuff & random tshirts that I only have for sentimental reasons (races, the school I used to work at, one I found 5 years ago at WeFest)  Perhaps that can go the next time around.  I am really in need of a new wardrobe but I already feel like I have so many clothes.  The problem is, most of those clothes either don't get worn, or they aren't super versatile.  I own way more racer back tank tops than necessary.  And while I wear them, I don't own enough clothes for work, or for going out for say happy hour.  Plus, I have had a lot of those clothes since I was probably 20-21.  I am now 27.  I always used to justify it by telling myself that they still fit, they aren't damaged, & they are basic enough to stand the test of time.  However, it's time for a new wardrobe.

I finished watching Love on Netflix, got in some blogging, & finally started catching up on tv shows that I hadn't watched since December.  My roommate & her husband closed on their house on Friday, & while she still technically lives here this last month, I basically had the apartment all to myself for the weekend & it was wonderful.

Family Is The Most Important Thing In The World

Linking up with Biana for Weekending.

My family came to visit me this weekend.  They arrived Thursday night & left Sunday morning.  So, instead of my normal day by day recap I'm going to do things a little differently this time.

 Austin
Our original plan was to go to Fredericksburg so my brother could see Enchanted Rock & then do Austin on Saturday.  Unfortunately it rained basically the entire time my family was in town so Friday after breakfast we headed to Austin.  Which would've been 100x more fun had it not been raining, or had I actually been there for SXSW & not just dodging crowds.  It wasn't a terrible time by any means, I just felt like I could've found something more exciting for them to do.

I had also wanted to try a new BBQ place, well new to me, but none of those options were available by the time we got there so I took them to Stiles Switch, which is still bomb BBQ & will always hold a special place in my heart because it's located where part of Dazed & Confused was filmed.

After BBQ I took them to South Congress to show them some of the shops & of course stop at Hey Cupcake.  My mom & I both got a triple chocolate while my dad got a carrot cake & my brother got a red velvet.  Tired of the rain we headed back to Houston for the night.

Tomball
Saturday we decided to have a chill day in Tomball, which is where I used to live.  I miss that little town so much & really wish my rent hadn't gone up to an unreasonable price because I miss EVERYTHING about that place.  Despite the rain we decided to check out the farmer's market, some antique shops, & of course Frosted...because cupcakes.  When I lived there my goal was to try all the flavors...I haven't...

Frosted
These are the 6 we got though.  I still have the blueberry cream cheese sitting in my fridge.  I ate the salted caramel one last night...SO good.  The other 4 I sent with my family.

The Food
When they came down I knew we'd be eating BBQ at least once.  That really wasn't even a question.
Thursday night we went to Spring Creek which is a chain but still pretty good.  Definitely better than something like Dickeys.
Friday before we left for Austin we wanted to stop at a breakfast buffet in Tomball that we've gone to both times my parents had been here before but they weren't open yet so we tried a place I'd never been to, CCs.  It was good.  An adorable little diner that made me wish I was back in Tomball even more.
For lunch we went to Stile Switch.  Their BBQ is amazing...even more amazing is the potato salad.  I could eat that potato salad all damn day.
That night we just ordered Dominos so no picture necessary...y'all know what Dominos looks like.
Finally Saturday morning we got to go to the breakfast buffet.  It's in Tomball & it's called The Patch.  That's all I've ever had there but it's good...and clearly it proves 2 things.  1)I'll never be a vegetarian & 2)there's a good chance that I'm going out by way of heart attack.
Having eaten so much food all weekend we skipped lunch.
For supper I took them to a place that I'd been to once before with Mr. Fireman called The Potatoe Patch because everyone wanted catfish.  The free appitizers they give you, fried okra & fried green tomatoes are so so...but the pickles & throw'd rolls are really good.  The catfish & shrimp were good too.  The scallops were meh.
Sunday morning before they left we tried another place I'd never been too & it was good but at that point I didn't care enough to take anymore pictures.  It's called I-45 Diner & it's your standard diner.  It was good but nothing fabulous to write home about.  I'd still go again though.

The Restaurants
Top 2: CCs Cafe
Middle 2: Stiles Switch BBQ
Bottom left: The Patch
Bottom right: Potatoe Patch

Odd Finds
These were random ass things I saw while were were on South Congress in Austin & looking through different stores in Tomball.  That cat freaks me the hell out.  The two signs with the piss poor spelling are from the same store...  That armadillo purse...real armadillo right there.  It's also $90 freakin dollars.  I get why it's so expensive but what I'm unsure of is why anyone would pay that much to carry around a dead armadillo...and I have a weird fascination with them...

A Weekend On The Road

Friday
Some friends & I spent most of the day at Saint Arnold's Brewery.  It's a local brewery in Houston.  It's only the second time I've ever been there but it was a lot of fun.  We drank a lot of beer, talked, & started playing a game but never actually finished it.

After we left there I had to haul ass back to my house & then to my old apartment so I could drop off my keys.  My sweet neighbor lady left a card for me in the office.  It definitely started opening up the flood gates.  I called Mr. Fireman when I got back to my house to see what time he was coming over & felt bad for hustling him off the phone but the second I hung up I lost it.  Like doubled over, ugly crying.  Everything became way too real.  It was the last time I would see Mr. & Mrs. Hipster on the regular and the last time I would ever be at my apartment.  I'm so weird about change.  I hate being in one place for too long & like/need to do new things but when it comes to big things like that I hate the adjustment period.

Mr. Fireman came over and took me out for supper.  We tried a new place called the White Flamingo.  It wasn't what we expected, as in considering it's not in the classiest neighborhood it was really nice.  The food was really good though.  Afterwards we just hung out at my house watching Space Jam & then he stayed with me so I wouldn't have to be alone on my last night...and ya know prevent any further breakdowns.

Saturday
Mr. Fireman & I woke up at the ass crack of dawn so he could go to work & I could hit the road.  I don't care how long I live there I will never get over how big Texas is.  It took me 5.5 hours to hit Arkansas.  I had never been to Arkansas before which is why I didn't take my normal route home.  Somewhere around BFE Arkansas I started getting whiny so I called my mom.  My ass was so numb from being in the car that long.  I stopped at the Natural Bridge of Arkansas somewhere along the way.  It was really neat.  I also got to drive through the Ozarks which was really pretty.  I don't care where they are or how many times I see them mountains will never get old.  By the time I rolled up to Branson around 5:30-6 at night I was starving & not in the mood to really do anything.  I ordered some pizza hut pasta (they didn't bring me silverware) so I ate it with my fingers...because I'm classy like that...and laid in bed watching Army Wives.

Sunday
I finally made it back to Minnesota.  I did nothing but drive all damn day.  I woke up at 5 am & left around 5:45.  I rolled into my hometown around 5 pm where I bought some flowers & cupcakes before heading home because it was my mama's birthday.  We grilled some chicken for supper.  Just being home is so nice.  I haven't been back here in almost 6 months.  Being on the road all day, for 2 days in a row, took a lot out of me so it was an early bedtime for me.  If you want to see all of my Instagram trip photos you can do so here.  You can tell I wasn't as into it on day 2 as I was the first day.  If you don't already follow me I'm private but I'll accept you if you send the request.

Music Monday
I haven't added one of these to my Monday post in awhile & when this song came around I knew I wanted to include it.  It's not exactly new but I love it & seeing as I just got back to my parents' place yesterday it's kind of perfect.

First Weekend In My New Place

Friday
I wish that beautiful truck was mine forever...well except I wish it had suicide doors on the back rather than 4 full doors.  Why do I have that truck you ask? (oh you didn't ask...too bad.)  I left work Friday at 11:30 & was headed to the Ford dealership so I could have a few things checked out & taken care of before I head up to Minnesota for a month & a half.  Because I was going to have to leave my car at the dealership I was going to need a rental so I got myself a sweet truck because a)I was in the middle of moving & needed to haul stuff b)I'm so much happier driving a truck.

Wouldn't that suck if the story stopped there.  That's where it should've stopped because regardless I would've ended up with a truck.  However, my Friday was a tad more eventful than that.  I was on my way to the dealership when there was a car stalled in the right lane of the feeder.  While waiting to get into the left lane I kept thinking "this is going to cause an accident...what if I got into an accident as I was on my way to the dealership to get my car fixed?"  Yeah well get into an accident I did.  As I was going left there was a cargo-ish van in my blind spot & I totally side swiped it.  No one was hurt luckily & the guy was super nice.  The damage also could've been a lot worse that it was.  My car still isn't pretty though & now I wait for an estimate on cost & time before deciding whether to get it fixed down here or wait until I get back up to MN (because it is drivable it just isn't pretty).

On the upside though I got to go to happy hour with some friends, I got a lawn mower and weed whacker for free, & I get that sweet ride for a few days.  It was also my final night in my apartment.

Saturday
Saturday was a lot less eventuful thank goodness.  First Texas Friend helped me move my large furniture to my new place in the morning/early afternoon.  I got some cleaning done at my apartment & just sort of bummed around there until I was supposed to meet Mr. Fireman (I realize I never updated on what happened after the whole letter post...that'll come someday...Thursday maybe?) at my new place.  We went out for pizza & then I had him try to help me with a few things at my new place.  After we settled some house business we played Phase 10 where I not only won but royally kicked his ass (75-190).  I can definitely count on one hand the number of times I've ever beat him at Phase 10...I'm actually thinking it's only twice (maaaybe 3 times).  After he headed home around 10 I called Kickass Cousin for what was supposed to be real quick & ended up lasting until 1:30 in the morning.  That is why she's my best friend, I hate talking on the phone & could not talk to anyone else on the phone that long.

Sunday
I officially said goodbye to my apartment.  (Well except that I am still paying for it until July 31 but I won't be in Texas at all during July.)  I finally got the whole thing cleaned & everything to my new place.  I picked up one of my friends from the airport who I hadn't seen in FOREVER.  He works in the same district as I do & actually went to the same college as I did but we didn't meet until about halfway through our student teaching.  We went out for wings & the last half of the USA/Portugal game.  He asked me with less than a minute left if I thought we were going to win (the score was 2-1) & I almost didn't say anything because I'm superstitious like that but said yes anyway...I clearly should've just kept my mouth shut because we ended up tying 2-2.  Don't get me wrong I love me some soccer & hockey but it pisses me off that they can tie.  SOMEONE HAS TO WIN!!

My Last Full Weekend In My Apartment

Friday
I started watching Army Wives again.  It still makes me cry even though I know how everything ends.  I also saw 22 Jump Street with Mr. & Mrs. Hipster.  I'm pretty sure I liked it better than the first one.  Afterwards I brought some more stuff over to my new place.  I am so over moving.

Saturday
I watched even more Army Wives, got almost my entire closet packed up (It really made me wonder why I always feel I have nothing to wear when I had to buy 90 more hangers...despite already having clothes on hangers & at my new place...).  I got to meet up with First Texas Friend & his fiance for a drink & appetizers before meeting up with Art teacher to go to the James Taylor concert.

Sunday
I packed some more, brought more over to my new place, & then packed even more.  I also read for a long time by the pool...actually in the pool because it's hot as hell here.  Then I of course spent the rest of the night watching Army Wives.  I should be procrastinating a whole lot less because I want everything except the big stuff out of my apartment by Saturday & starting Tuesday I'm subbing half days for summer school.

Memorial Weekend

"I thank God for my life, for the stars & stripes, may freedom forever fly, let it ring.  Salute the ones who died, the ones who give their lives, so we don't have to sacrifice all the things we love."

Friday
Art Teacher & I went to an outdoor Journey & Steve Miller Band concert.  The venue is so awesome.  I've been there a few times before.  You can't actually see anything but since the venue is open air you can hear perfectly.  So that means a)you don't have to pay for tickets b)you don't have to pay for food or booze because you can bring your own.  WINNING!  Afterwards we headed to Bar Louie for bloodys, calamari, loaded tots, & spin dip.  It. Was. Awesome.  I was so exhausted by the time I got home though I debated just climbing into bed with my clothes on & contacts in.  Logic won out.

Saturday
Due to not getting home until the wee hours of the morning I managed to stay in bed until noon.  I felt a combination of laziness & awesomeness.  Once I finally got my ass out of bed I headed to my favorite place (the park) where I just sat around taking pictures & talking to my mom & Kickass Cousin for a couple hours.  I spent the rest of the night making dips for a get together & finishing Breaking Bad.  I think I now need a tiny Netflix break.

Sunday
Little Miss Indiana, her boyfriend, Mr & Mrs. Hipster, and another guy we work with all got together to grill at my favorite park.  It was a lot of fun.  The weather was great, the food was awesome, & getting to spend one of the last weekends we all have together was perfect.  At the end of this school year Little Miss Indiana is headed back to Indiana & at the end of the summer Mr. & Mrs. Hipster are headed to Dallas.  Unfortunately, I was a bad blogger & basically took no pictures.  We were too busy talking & having fun for me to really whip out my camera.

Music Monday
It Ain't Yours To Throw Away - Nashville
