All He Wants Is Cards

I saw this news story on Twitter on Tuesday & knew I had to share with y'all.  I realize the boys' birthday is tomorrow & so your cards probably wouldn't get there on his birthday but based on the article I'm sure he'd love to have the mail keep coming in even after his birthday.  So do me a favor, read the article below & then send the little boy a card to make his day!

5-year-old battling cancer only wants cards for birthday

FOXBORO, Mass. -

A 5-year-old boy who is battling cancer only wants a mailbox full of birthday cards for his birthday.

Danny Nickerson, who lives in Massachusetts, will turn six on July 25.

Last October, he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. It is one of the most chemotherapy-resistant cancers.

Less than 10 percent of the children diagnosed with this type of disease live longer than 18 months.

“He had 33 radiations from November through December last year,” Danny’s mother, Carley Nickerson, said. “We are now getting chemotherapy every two weeks.”

Danny had to stop kindergarten because of his illness. He gets lonely, but getting cards in the mail always cheer him up.

“He can recognize his name now,” Carley explained. “When he saw his name on the package from magical fairies on Easter, he was so happy.”

The cards and packages stop coming after Easter, so Danny is eager to get more mail for his birthday. His mother said he loves Super Mario and Lego.

So far, Danny has received 40 cards.

28 Random Acts of Kindness

On Thursday I completed my 10th random act of kindness.  The day before I had a group of 5 girls ask me if I would donate money to one of their friends.  Apparently the friend's place burned down & she lost everything in the fire.  The friend also has a 2 month old son.  I told them I didn't have any cash.  Partly, because I never tell my students that I have cash (I usually don't) yet they still ask on a daily basis for money & partly because even though those 5 are some of my favorites I didn't want to just hand over the less than $10 in cash I had.  So the girls were brainstorming ways to raise money & get supplies for the friend.  I suggested they talk to some of the organizations on campus to see if they would do a fundraiser.  They started making a list of things they would buy with the money.  Most of the items included "fun" things such as baby clothes.  I really wanted to do something to help them out though so on my way home I stopped at Walmart.

Random Act of Kindness #10:

I picked up some different size diapers, wipes, & pacifiers & gave it to the girls at the end of class.  The looks on their faces was completely worth it.  (The chocolate is for me by the way ha)

28 Random Acts of Kindness - Vday Edition

Today for my next 3 acts of kindness I handed out mini boxes of chocolates to 3 co-workers.  Except for I put them in their mailboxes during the last period of school so they won't know it was me.  I have 3 co-teachers that I work with because I have special ed students in my class so those are the 3 I chose.  I didn't buy them with them in mind but it just turned out sort of perfect that I had 3 left over & happen to have 3 different co-teachers throughout the day.

28 Random Acts of Kindness

Nearly 2 weeks ago I posted about how my first acts of kindness were notes that I was going to leave for people hoping to brighten their day.  If you want to know what the letters said you can check that out here.

The hard part was deciding how to deliver them.  My first thought was windshields.  Eh didn't really like it.  Partly because I didn't want to walk around a parking lot putting stuff on people's cars.  Second thought was to put them in random mailboxes at work.  I didn't really want to do that either.  Then I thought, tape them random places?  That's not what happened either.  So what did happen??  I killed two birds with one stone that's what happened.

I needed a new book because I finished mine 2 days ago so I went to Walmart this evening to pick up a new one.  I brought my notes with me & picked 6 random hardcover books & stuck them somewhere around the middle so they won't be found until the person has already bought the book & has started reading it.  On my newest 101 in 1001 was to leave a note in a book...I left 6!

I can't remember exactly which books I left them in...one was about Lincoln, one was a cook book, one was a teen book, one was about a victim of Sandusky, one was about marriage...annnd I can't even think what the last one was at all.

My next 3 acts... boxes of chocolate which I'll deliver on Valentine's Day.  Any ideas on how/where/who to deliver to??  My only thought right now is to put them in 3 random mail boxes at work but I really don't know how I'm feelin about the idea.

28 Random Acts of Kindness

Back on the 1st I blogged about my goals for the year.  One of my goals was to complete 28 random acts of kindness, an idea I got from Tiffany.  Back in August when I moved into my apartment there was a little welcome basket for me which among other things included stationary.  I've used maybe one or two so I decided to use my remaining 6 to kick off my challenge.  I found some encouraging quotes online & wrote them in the cards & then on the envelope wrote have a _____ day (some synonym way cooler than good).  Now I just need to find 6 random places to leave them!
