The First 48

So I was really hoping that the title of this post was going to be 48 Hours Without a Phone.  However, thanks to Verizon that's not the case.  Instead it'll be more like 150+ Hours Without a Phone.  Let us back up a bit shall we?

Tuesday 9/12 1:30-2:20 pm During my off period my phone was working just fine.  In fact I spent most of that time playing on it (checking Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc)

Tuesday 9/12 2:25-2:35 pm My 6th period class starts.  I get Student News up & running for the kids to start the class period & continue to check emails & such on my phone since my laptop is preoccupied with the news.

Tuesday 9/12 2:35-2:45ish pm I set my phone down, pass out packets with instructions for a big project they are about to begin, & then explain what they need to do, expectations, deadlines, etc

Tuesday 9/12 3:45ish-3:05ish pm My phone was still just on the desk as I helped students with their project

Tuesday 9/12 3:05ish pm I went the check my phone to see what time it was only to be greeted by the black screen of death

Tuesday 9/12 3:05ish-4:15ish pm I tried looking online at ways to fix my phone without having any luck & then looked online at purchasing my new phone

Tuesday 9/12 4:15ish-8:30ish pm Volleyball game.  Luckily it was home.  For the most part that 4 hours was the easiest part of the day without a phone.  I had something to do & wouldn't have been on my phone anyway.  Not being able to check the time or have a timer for a player that was icing her knee was a slight inconvenience.  My mom was given the task of taking over the ordering the phone online process.

Tuesday 9/12 8:30ish- 9:30 pm Full fledged freak out mode.  According to Verizon if I ordered by 10 pm CST I could get the phone by Wednesday.  However, I was struggling with it trying to get answers from customer service online.  On top of still being at work & trying to do it on the wifi there before getting kicked out for the night.  Once again my mom was tasked with taking over.

Tuesday 9/12 9:35ish pm I have a breakdown at a stoplight that will not turn green & just start bawling because the entire day had been a mess from the time I left for work.

Tuesday 9/12 10ish pm I finally arrive home, take care of Nash, & then have another meltdown.  My mom got the phone ordered however a)the website lied & next day shipping must be done by 4:30 & b)they sent out the confirmation having it shipped it to the billing address instead of the shipping address.  Supposedly this was fixed & she was given a ticket number.

Tuesday 9/12 10:30ish pm- Wednesday 4:20ish am I slept like crap.  I normally wake up at least once or twice during the night anyway but because I have no idea where my real alarm clock is, or if I even still have it, I set an alarm on my laptop & kept being paranoid it wouldn't go off.  So even though I normally wake up at 5, when I was up at 4:20 I just decided to stay up & get ready for the day.

Wednesday 4:20ish- 6 am Nash & I got ready for the day, hung out, & watched some of The Office

Wednesday 6- 6:45 am I commuted to work... with commercials.  Holy rage.  I hate listening to the radio because of commercials.  That's why I normally listen to Spotify on my phone.  I do have some CDs & I listened to them a little but I like the variety of shuffle.

Wednesday 6:45- 7:30 am I got stuff ready for the day & hung out in my office until practice

Wednesday 7:30-9:50 am Volleyball practice.  I had no way of contacting late/absent players & had to use my laptop as both a timer & a clock.

Wednesday 9:50am- 4:10 pm Except for not being able to look at the time on my phone, or randomly check social media, being at work without a phone isn't that rough.  I have access to everything on my school laptop.  I obsessively checked the status of my phone & ALL DAY it still said it was processing & hadn't shipped.  How am I supposed to receive the phone by Thursday if it hasn't even shipped by Wednesday afternoon??

Wednesday 4:10- 5:15 pm I commuted home stuck in traffic & couldn't even Google Map a faster alternate route.

Wednesday 5:15- 9:30 pm I dealt with Verizon customer service (3 different reps) trying to get real answers & solutions as to if the shipping address had been fixed, when I would get it, & if it had shipped at all.  Rep 1 told me it had in fact shipped & all was good.  Rep 2 told me they had changed the address & assured me multiple times that I would get the phone by Thursday.  Rep 3 told me that I was never going to get it on Thursday because I had ordered it so late on Tuesday but that it had been changed.  However, there was also a big possibility that it wouldn't even be re-routed until it arrived in Minnesota on Friday morning.

Wednesday 9:30- 10:30 pm I stayed up watching HGTV so that I could catch Helene & Michael's episode of House Hunters International.

Wednesday 10:30 pm- Thursday 4:45 am Again with the crappy sleep because I was paranoid about not waking up to my laptop alarm.

Thursday 4:45- 6am Obsessively checked tracking to see if the new location had been updated.  It hadn't... but it did arrive at a new facility...

Thursday 6- 6:45 am Again with the commuting & no variety of music.  I did give up on the radio fairly quickly though to listen to CDs

Thursday 6:45- 3:15 pm Again with the obsessive checking & a lack of movement of the phone or change of the address.

And there you have it folks... the first 48 hours of being cell phone free.  In all honesty, when I'm at work or at home it's really not all that bad.  I have access to all social media (minus Snapchat) whenever I have a laptop on me.

What sucks the most is the little things that I relied on my phone for:
-checking the time
-a stopwatch in practice
-an alarm clock
-being able to sort out problems or quick questions via phone call or text

What sucks even more is the runaround that Verizon has given me & mistakes they've made:
-telling me if I ordered by 10 pm I could get it the next day when really it had to be by 4:30
-shipping it to the billing address instead of the shipping address
-having 2 people tell me they changed it to the correct address, assure me that I would receive it by Thursday, & then not changing the address at all

As of 3:15 pm on Thursday:
-the address had not been changed to TX from MN
-the last movement the phone had made was at 2:21 am on Thursday when it arrived at a FedEx location in Memphis... from a FedEx location in Memphis...

Here's to hoping I get that phone ASAP!

    1. Thanks! I'm trying to figure out a plan for communicating with the bus driver & such for tomorrow's tournament since I'm phoneless. The last move my phone made was at 6 pm last night...to Minneapolis MN. At this point, oh well. My mom will probably end up having to overnight FedEx it to me tomorrow morning.

  3. Ugh so sad you have to go so long without a phone. I would seriously lose my brain without mine!!! On another note, I watched Helene's episode too!

  4. I once hugged a FedEx guy because he delivered a replacement phone when I thought I wasn't going to get it before a trip.

Hopefully, by now, the phone has arrived and life is good again!
