5 Books That Helped Me Change My Mindset

I don't remember exactly when I downloaded Audible, but I do remember why.  I had gotten a copy of The Girl on the Train for Christmas but it was unreadable.  Some of the text was so off I had no idea what was happening.  As in there were not only typos, but also missing text, & swapped text.  If it hadn't been for a couple of my friends raving about the book I probably would have just let it go.

I fought audio books for a long time because I was a strict "music in the car" person.  However, I'm also really bad at sitting down & reading books.  Because I really wanted to know what happened in the book, & because I have an hour+ commute to work each way everyday, I decided to give it a try.

I'm still a music in the morning type of person, but I'd say at least half the time on my way home I listen to audio books.  And after finishing The Girl on the Train, my Audible library quickly became filled with personal development type books.  In fact, of the 13 books I currently have in my library, over half are some type of PD/self-help book.

Here are 5 that started shifting the way I approach life.  They're in order based on how much I enjoyed them.  I've actually listened to the first two twice.

Personal Development

I am mildly obsessed with Iliza Shlesinger.  I have also watched each of her Netflix specials multiple times, & if I get my act together, hopefully I will get a ticket to see her perform when she comes to Dallas later this month.

I also find Jen Sincero particularly awesome & have listened to another one of her books, which I'll share on another post, & can't wait to listen to the rest of the books she has written.

And while I actually found Girl, Wash Your Face slightly preachy at times, I am looking forward to Girl, Stop Apologizing & hearing her speak at a conference I'll be attending in July.

Do you listen to/read personal development/self-help books?  If so, what are some of your favorites?  I'm always looking for more to add to my list!  Podcasts welcome too!

  2. Girl, Wash Your Face, YYYAAAASSS. There were parts that didn't apply to me and parts that I found completely unrealistic (the whole husband situation disaster), but there were so many poignant things that I took away, I still LURRVVEEDD this book. In fact, IIIII preached about it to everyone that would listen. :D

I have a hard time with PD books, generally. I guess because I have a slightly weird mindset compared to the general population so I'm reading along like, "Duuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh." So then I get sassy and annoyed and don't pay attention anymore and get bored.. It's a nasty cycle.

And for as much as I use the word fuck, I have only read ONE book with the word fuck in the title and I didn't even remember it until I checked my Goodreads.

  4. Thanks for sharing these! My mom was reading the Mark Manson book on our trip last month... so maybe I'll borrow it from her. I've just started a trial of audible. I'm still on the fence, but we'll see. I think I would feel differently if I had your commute for sure, lol.

  5. You Are a Badass was the first self-help book I ever read! I don't know if Jen still does her Badass Bootcamp, but I did it back in 2014, and it's what got me to start my blog! :)
